Change of judge granted in Cape vandalism case

The man accused of causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage to a Cape Girardeau office building has been granted a change of judges.

Travis H. Fornkohl of Cape Girardeau was scheduled for an arraignment Monday in the vandalism of an office building at 3065 William St. that occurred the night of June 30, but Fornkohl's attorney, Malcolm Montgomery, filed a motion for a change of judges. Judge Gary Kamp granted the motion.

Investigators believe Fornkohl opened a water valve at the top of the six-story office building, which houses federal offices, doctors' offices and other businesses. Investigators initially thought the leak was an accident, but evidence later led them to believe the leak was malicious. Damage was reported on all six floors.

Authorities released security photos of a suspect in the case Thursday, then arrested Fornkohl on Friday and charged him with second-degree burglary and first-degree property damage.
