Nominations are now being accepted for the second annual Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce Educators of the Year Awards. The awards will be presented by the Chamber's Education Committee in May.
Designed to focus attention on excellence in education, the awards will honor an educator in each of five categories: elementary, secondary, special services and vocational education, and administration.
Full-time educators in Cape Girardeau are eligible to be candidates. School personnel whose duties are primarily administrative or supervisory, such as principals, guidance counselors and librarians, are eligible under the administrator category.
"Candidates should be skilled, dedicated educators who plan to continue in the education field," Chamber Education Committee Chairman Kim McDowell said.
She added that candidates should have the respect and admiration of students, parents and colleagues, should inspire students of different backgrounds, should be active in their communities and should be poised and articulate.
Individuals or groups may submit letters nominating educators to the chamber office by Dec. 1 at 5 p.m.
Educators will be told of their nomination and who nominated them by Dec. 15. They then will receive an application form to be turned in to the chamber office by March 1 at 5 p.m.
The chamber's education committee will then appoint a committee to review candidate application materials.
The 1995 Award honorees will be announced April 7.
Winners will receive cash awards of $250 and a crystal apple of recognition to be presented at a dinner honoring them on May 4.
