Four Cape Girardeau teachers and one professor have been named 2000 Educators of the Year by the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce.

The recipients are Jacqueline Brandtner of the Deer Creek Christian Academy, Barbara Egbert of Franklin Elementary School, Gail Fairbanks of Blanchard Elementary School and Bill Springer of Central High School.

Dr. Charles Wiles was named the University Educator of the Year.

Brandtner teaches students in kindergarten through eighth grade in a multi-age classroom and has been teaching for 19 years.

Egbert, a teacher for 16 years, has been teaching kindergarten at Franklin for four years.

Fairbanks teaches children with behavior disorders in kindergarten through sixth grade. She has been teaching behavior disordered students for 10 years and has been a teacher for 22.

Springer has been teaching English and history at Central High School 10 of his total 31 years in teaching.

Wiles is a marketing professor who has been at Southeast his entire 30-year teaching career.

The awards will be presented May 4 at the annual Educator of the Year Awards Banquet at the Drury Lodge.
