Cape Girardeau's 10th annual BBQ Fest will be held Aug. 23 and 24 at Arena Park in Cape Girardeau.

Jeff Glenn, director of membership development for the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, said that the annual BBQ Fest serves two purposes: to promote the use of beef and pork, and to provide an opportunity for the area's best backyard barbecue teams to compete for bragging rights and a $200 grand prize.

Meat categories this year include hamburgers, beef kebabs, beef boneless strip steak, roast pork (Boston butt), pork steaks and pork ribs. The first-place team in each meat category will receive $50, and trophies or ribbons will be awarded to the top three places in each barbecue category. The grand champion of the Cape BBQ Fest will receive a trophy and $200.

In order to be eligible for the grand prize, the participant team must have competed in four of the six categories.

The showmanship category will highlight the social aspect of the event and will be part of Friday night's program. Showmanship consists of entertainment presented by participating teams to amuse other teams and the public through skits, decorations, costumes, enthusiasm and crowd participation. Judging for the Showmanship category will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Games and other contests will be held Friday, starting at 6 p.m. Many teams take advantage of the activities on Friday evening as a company barbecue/picnic for their employees and friends. Family, friends and business associates help their teams test their barbecue before judging on Saturday.

There is no charge for entering a team. The BBQ Fest is sponsored as a part of the 2002 Corporate Partnership Program. Members of the Chamber's BBQ Fest Committee will offer beef and pork sandwiches and soft drinks for sale to the public.

Those interested in entering a team, or those with questions, may call Glenn at 335-3312.
