The Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce membership is near the 1,200 mark, following a one-day membership recruitment blitz Tuesday that resulted in at least 76 new members.

"Our goal for the annual one-day membership drive was 75," said Bart Ozbun, membership drive chairman. "The initial count Tuesday evening shows us with 76 new paid memberships."

Ozbun said the chamber's annual goal was to see the membership at 1,250 by year's end.

"I think we'll see another 15 to 20 members trickle in this week," he said. "That would put us right at 1,200, with seven months left to reach our year-end goal."

The membership drive Tuesday started with a kickoff breakfast. The final wrapup count started at 4:30 p.m., with a deadline of 5 p.m. to turn in new members.

More than 100 volunteers, armed with prospective member cards and informational packets, visited pro~spective members throughout the day Tuesday.

A membership orientation session will be held June 18 at the Cape Girardeau Country Club for members who have joined the chamber since Feb. 19. Chamber programs and services will be discussed.
