Chaffee mayor changes mind, decides not to resign

The Southeast Missourian's Peg McNichol is reporting from Chaffee that Loretta Mohorc has decided not to resign as mayor after all.

Earlier today the Southeast Missourian received a letter from Mohorc to the Scott County Signal, a sister publication of the Southeast Missourian, that announced her plans to resign. According to the letter, the city council asked for her resignation. She said she was resigning to protect her family from the backlash.

She changed her mind after the Scott County Signal went to press.

Loretta Mohorc announced that she was resigning from her post as Chaffee mayor in her weekly letter to the Scott County Signal.

She said she resigned at the same closed meeting where city leaders discussed recent complaints about Chaffee's police department.

In the letter, Mohorc wrote:

"Much discussion was heard at which I am legally bound not to discuss, nor are the council or the chief. The result of the meeting is that I was asked to verbally give my resignation or be impeached. I will not put my family through that. When a resolution is reached in a closed meeting, that can be made public.

"To all my beloved citizens, I am so sorry that it came to this. My only objective from day one is to do what my public wants, and to improve the quality of life for everyone."

In the letter she stated some of her accomplishments, which she said included acquiring vouchers for the public works department for training and creditation certificates, ongoing study on the sewer lagoon, saving the city thousands on a new phone server, working closely with county officials.

"I love Chaffee, always did and always will even in the light of the request of my resignation. I gave it. Why? To save my family any backlash they may encounter in the community. I was accused of being a liar and a nonChristian."
