BENTON, Mo. -- A 48-year-old Chaffee, Mo., man was charged Friday with felony livestock theft for allegedly stealing more than 200 sows and selling them at an auction, according to a news release from Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter.

Dale R. Nedrow, a contracted grower from Westlake Farms in Owensboro, Ky., was taken into custody Thursday after he resisted arrested at his residence.

The Scott County Sheriff's Department began looking into the livestock theft earlier this week after Westlake Farms reported a large number of sows missing from a grower's land in Chaffee. Further investigation uncovered that Nedrow had allegedly been selling the sows at a local auction for more than a year and a half.

When a deputy was escorting Nedrow out of an office building, Nedrow briefly broke away and grabbed a .22 caliber firearm. Although Nedrow was able to fire one shot during the struggle, Walter said the deputy acted quickly and took the handgun from Nedrow.

Neither Nedrow nor the officer were hit by the round fired, but the officer suffered minor injuries to both hands during the incident.

In addition to the felony livestock theft, Nedrow is also charged with felony resisting arrest and felony attempted assault on a law enforcement officer. He was in the Scott County Jail on Friday on a $100,000 cash-only bond.
