CHAFFEE, Mo. — Chaffee firefighters worked for about six hours extinguishing hot spots at a house at 115 W. Parker Ave., fire chief Sam Glency said.

The back section of the house was enveloped in flames when firefighters arrived about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Glency said. Firefighters had the fire contained after about an hour, Glency said.

Firefighters worked for hours taking out debris and extinguishing hot spots because several additions had been put on the house over the years, and the fire got between the walls, ceiling and floor of the second level, Glency said.

“People don’t take time to do things right,” Glency said of the home’s previous remodeling jobs.

The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and Glency was trying to get in touch with the owner. The house recently changed ownership and was undergoing more renovations during the day, Glency said. Glency is unsure who was working on the house.

Glency said he could not determine what caused the fire but did not suspect foul play. He said the fire was concentrated in a back room where a new electrical-panel box had been installed, and an electrical origin for the fire was a possibility.

“There was power to the house,” Glency said. “If not, I would have called the fire marshal.”

Delta and Scott City fire departments provided mutual aid, Glency said. The Chaffee Fire Department is a volunteer unit.
