CHAFFEE -- The Chaffee City Council has decided to sell a quarter-acre lot to people it knew, even though their bid was $300 less than the other bidder.
The council voted 5-0 to sell a vacant triangular lot on North Main Street next to the old shoe factory parking lot to Robert E. Foulk of Chaffee for $450.
Virgil and Billy Sue Snowden of Springfield bid $760 for the property.
Council members said they didn't know the Snowdens, but they knew what Foulk intended to do with the property.
Council member Tom Cunningham said he would rather sell the lot to someone he knew.
At the meeting, Jack Limbaugh was sworn in to fill the unexpired term in Ward 2. A new member should be elected April 4.
In other action, Cunningham told the other council members that construction on the new MFA facility in the industrial park has progressed to where water is needed at the site.
The council followed his suggestion to run a temporary four-inch line to the property, which is about 550 feet from the main line in front of Columbia Sportswear. He said the city didn't have the required time, estimated at 90 days, to seek state approval for extending the main line to the property.
