A special luminaria candle ceremony will be held next month when the American Cancer Society's Jackson Relay for Life remembers those lost to cancer and honors those who have survived.
Luminaria candles will be lit at the Jackson City Park at 10 p.m. Aug. 3 to represent those individuals. The honorees will be named, as well as the donor, during a special ceremony.
People desiring to purchase a luminaria candle may do so by contacting the American Cancer Society at 334-9197. Luminaria candles are $10.
"It will be beautiful when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the track," said Crystal Burress, luminaria chair. "We hope to sell enough to light the entire area."
Relay for Life is a fun-filled, overnight event where teams of eight to 12 members gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fund-raising walk in the nation.
Relay For Life brings together friends, family, businesses, hospitals, schools, churches and people from all walks of life.
Jackson's cancer survivors will kick off Relay For Life at 7 p.m. Aug. 3 with the first official lap; then the rest of the participants will join the fun.
