Central Junior High School art teacher and Central High School varsity football and track coach Lawrence Brookins was named Cape Girardeau Wal-Mart teacher of the year Wednesday.
Brookins has been in Cape Girardeau schools for six years.
Prior to that time he spent 19 years teaching and coaching in Columbia, Mo., Kirksville, Mo., and Moberly, Mo.
He and his wife, Willetta, live in Cape Girardeau with their twin 18-year-old children, Marquis and Marquita. They also have a 24-year-old daughter Larisa.
Along with the honor of being named teacher of the year, Brookins was presented with a $500 check.
