Autumn McSpadden of Cape Girardeau was elected secretary of the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association at a summer media workshop held in Columbia last week.
She also received an honorable mention for front page design in the newspaper editor's seminar.
McSpadden is a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School, where she is a member of The Tiger newspaper staff and the Thespian Club.
Missouri Interscholastic Press Association was founded 70 years ago by Walter Williams, who also founded the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The purpose of the organization is to promote scholastic journalism on the secondary school level.
As secretary, McSpadden's duties will include voting on the Missouri Journalism Teacher of the Year, helping at MIPA awards day and planning social activities for the summer media workshop.
She is the daughter of Fara McSpadden of Advance and Fred Naeter of Cape Girardeau.
Central junior Erin Riches, 15, also attended the workshop. She received the Excellence in Newswriting Award in the advanced newswriting seminar. She is the daughter of Patty Riches of Cape Girardeau and Geoff Riches of Delray Beach, Fla. Riches is a member of the track and cross country teams and The Tiger staff.
Junior Livi Selzer, 15, also attended. She is a member of the Girardot yearbook staff.
Rae Anne Kloss, Central publications adviser, accompanied the students to the workshop.
