Cape Girardeau Central High School was recently selected as a winner of a $10,000 grant from the Goody's Good Deeds for Schools program. The grant program awards $10,000 grants to 50 schools in communities where Goody's stores are located for needed items that schools cannot afford through education funding.
Steve Schaffner, Central High School and Junior High School orchestra instructor, said the money will be spent on several stringed instruments including cellos and violas, replacement strings, bridges and related items.
Schaffner said he wasn't surprised that Central was selected. "We put together a good video and demonstrated the need."
Julia Jorgensen, the high school's librarian, made Schaffner aware of the grant. "She has written several," he said.
In its inaugural year, the Goody's Good Deeds for Schools program received more than 1,000 applications. Grant applications went through two rounds of judging, and grants were based on the demonstration of compelling need, an effective and executable plan of action, wise use of resources.
