Central High School's Student Senate will hold a live and a silent auction to help pay some of the costs associated with sponsoring the state convention of the Missouri Association of Student Councils.

More than 1,200 high school students from across Missouri will stay with local families for the weekend of the convention next March.

The auction is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday in the high school commons.

The Central student senate is hoping to raise at least $10,000 with the auction.

Items to be auctioned off range from gift cards, a pizza a month for a year, teeth cleaning, a blue stone diamond ring to eight St. Louis Blues tickets with parking passes. Most of the items were donated from businesses and people in the community.

Whether a person has children here or not, it supports the community as a whole, lead advisor Kathy Wright said.

"Auctions are fun; you can see that it's going to a good cause and you can help us out," said Jami Dement, student senate member and senior.

The funds will go to pay for leadership activities, such as an obstacle course and a speaker for the convention.

"The goal is for the kids to have fun and enjoy themselves but mainly to learn more about leadership," said Linnea Woldtvert, student senate member and senior.

At the state convention last year, Central was elected by the rest of the state's student senates to serve as president to host the state convention.

This is the fourth time Central has served as president in the last 25 years. They also served as president in 1982, 1992 and 2002.

Once the school is elected, the advisor of that school appoints chairs of the various convention activities.

For example, Dement and Morgan Feurerhahn are the state chairs of the dance and banquet. They are in charge of the committee and getting things organized.

Wright is retiring at the end of the year and last year Central's student senate decided to run for president again so Wright could "go out on top."

Student senate gives the students a voice in their school, Wright said.

"If they utilize it the way it's supposed to be then they are representing a good portion of the students in the school, they meet with the administrators and the leadership teams," she said.

Assemblies and fund raisers go through the student senate.
