POPLAR BLUFF - Arkansas State Treasurer Jimmie Lou Fisher and Missouri Lt. Gov. Mel Carnahan will be featured speakers tonight at the 27th annual Truman Day Rally in Poplar Bluff.
Fisher will attend the rally as a designated representative of the Clinton-Gore campaign and will bring a personal greeting from Gov. Bill Clinton. For several months she has been active in the campaign, traveling around the country.
Carnahan, the Democratic Party's nominee for governor, is trying to be the first Democrat elected governor in 12 years. Carnahan, a former state representative and majority floor leader, was elected state treasurer in 1980 and lieutenant governor in 1988.
Tonight's rally will start at 6 p.m. at the Elks Lodge on Highway 67 North. Tickets to the event are $15 and proceeds will be used to help Democratic candidates in the Nov. 3 general election.
All of the statewide Democratic candidates have also been invited to the rally, and several are expected to attend.
Fisher, a native of Delight, Ark., was appointed Arkansas state auditor in 1979 by Clinton. She was elected to three two-year terms as state treasurer and currently is serving her second four-year term in that office.

In addition, Fisher has been honored by the Democratic Party. This year she was selected as the "Outstanding Elected Democratic Woman" by the National Association of Democratic Women.
Carnahan, who is from Rolla, was born at Birch Tree in Shannon County and grew up near Ellsinore. His father, the late A.S.J. Carnahan, served as congressman from this area for 14 years in the late 1940s and '50s and was later named ambassador to Sierra Leone, Africa.
