U.S. Sen. Jean Carnahan pushed "freedom, faith and family" on Monday as she kicked off a four-day campaign swing through the state with several stops in Southeast Missouri.

"Our theme is freedom, faith and family because those are the values that have shaped my life, the values that guide me every day in the United States Senate," she said.

Traveling in a campaign bus, Carnahan visited the Irving Berry farm near Fruitland, Mo., to tout the new farm bill passed by Congress.

"I own a farm myself just outside of Rolla and have fond memories of raising my children there," Missouri's Democratic senator said. "Keeping the farm is important to us, just as it is important for Missouri to hold onto our family farms."

Carnahan said the farm bill gives farmers flexibility as to what to plant while also providing a financial safety net for farmers. "It will help rural America become healthier and more robust," she said.

Monday's campaign swing began in Forest Park in St. Louis, followed by an afternoon stop at the Berry farm, and stops at a Sikeston area farm and a feed store in Poplar Bluff.

The campaign swing is expected to cover 1,500 miles.

Carnahan is opposed in November by Republican Jim Talent and Libertarian Tamara Millay.
