The Cape Girardeau Central Junior High School Knowledge Master team placed first in Missouri and sixth in the world during recent competition.

The Central High School team ranked fifth in Missouri and nationally placed 107 out of 1,704 schools.

The junior high school team scored 1,779 of a possible 2,000 points and answered 197 of 200 questions correctly.

The high school team scored 1,612 of a possible 2,000 points and answered 190 of 200 questions correctly.

Using knowledge derived for all areas of the curricula, teams faced tough questions and vied for top scores based on accuracy and speed.

The mass of a quart of milk is approximately: A. 1 gram; B. 1 kilogram; C. 1 decigram; D. 1 hectogram.

The answer is B.

This is one of the three questions the junior high school team missed out of 200 questions.

The contest was developed to run on classroom computers in order to provide all schools the opportunity to compete in a worldwide contest without the expense of traveling to a central site.

It was the 15th time the junior high has entered the Knowledge Master competition.

"This is the highest total points our team has ever accumulated; however, so was the first-place score of 1,832 compiled by Madison Junior High School of Appleton, Wis.," said Dixie Lee Cook, academic coach. "It appeared to me that the questions were a bit easier than last fall's, but I continue to be extremely proud to be able to work with these incredible students."

This is also the 15th time the high school team has competed in the Knowledge Master open.

The team had placed first in Missouri in the seven previous competitions.

Members of the junior high team are: ninth-graders Andy Fiehler, John Hearnes, Jennie Lukens, Eric McGowen, Josh Miller and Sabrina Renka; eighth-graders Casey Cook, Gabe Hart, David Hearnes, Aaron Hessenkemper, Jennifer Jones, Saki Ligonis, Todd Matzat and Emily Trueblood; and seventh-graders, Earl Heck, Elizabeth Kunz, David Linden and Bonnie Taylor.

Members of the high school team are: sophomore, Lance Haman; juniors, Bob Barringer, J.J. Haycraft, Chris Robertson, Rene Robinson and Jennifer Worth; seniors Mala Ahuja, William Campbell, Sky Carroll, Haresh Kamath, Jason Merkler and Hema Rajan.

Ann Bartlett is the academic coach.
