A Cape Girardeau woman is dead, and a Tamms, Ill., woman was in surgery Monday night, after a two-car accident in rural Alexander County, Ill.

Cristen J. Aufdenberg, 19, 2500 Ranchito St., died from injuries in the accident. She was driving westbound on Grapevine Trail Road, one-quarter mile east of the Egyptian School Road between Tamms and Olive Branch when her car collided head-on with one driven by Robyn K. Ford, 18, of Tamms.

The Illinois State Police reported that at 1:55 p.m. Monday, Ford was headed east when she drove off the right side of the road, hit a guard rail and crossed into the westbound lane.

An ambulance took her to Southeast Missouri Hospital.

Patricia Ford, mother of Robyn, said her daughter was in "serious condition, but it's fixable." She said her daughter suffered a broken jaw, a broken ankle and some bad abrasions.

Police said the accident is being investigated.
