The Cape Girardeau West Rotary Club made a gift of $10,000 to establish a scholarship through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.

"The university has been awfully good to Cape over the years," said Steve Schneider, the club's president. "We hope this scholarship is a way of doing something positive to give back to the university."

In addition, Schneider said, the scholarship will benefit youth in the community.

Those eligible for the scholarship must be undergraduates enrolled full time with at least a 2.75 grade-point average and financial need. They must also be students who have completed 30 hours of coursework by the time the award is made.

Recipients must be an employee or child of an employee of a firm or organization with which a Cape West Rotarian is associated or from which a Cape West Rotarian has retired. Children of Cape West Rotarians are not eligible for the scholarship.

In making application for the scholarship, students must include a paragraph describing qualities of leadership, good character and citizenship implicit in the Rotary's motto of "Service Above Self" and its "Four Way Test." The "Four Way Test" encompasses truth, fairness, good will, concern for others and friendship.

The application also must include a brief statement of support from the Rotarian where he or she works.

The scholarship will be awarded for the first time next spring. The recipient will be selected by the university's scholarship office.

The Cape West Rotary Club was established 33 years ago. It has 85 members.

This is the second scholarship the club has endowed. The first was the W. Victor Hill and Cape West Rotary Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students. It was established in 1987 and has a balance of $28,253.

The new scholarship was developed under the leadership of John Koch, chairman of the club's scholarship committee.
