Hundreds of volunteers were honored for their 1995 service to the 150 residents at the Cape Girardeau Missouri Veterans Home during Volunteer Appreciation Night held Friday.
Veterans Home volunteers deliver ice and water each morning, deliver mail in the afternoon, operate the canteen and information desk, assist with outings and in-house activities, make personal visits and help in many other ways.
Since the opening of the Veterans Home in the spring of 1990, 116,853 volunteer hours have been served through December 31, 1995. Volunteer hours have increased from nearly 16,000 during the first full year of 1991 to nearly 25,000 hours during 1995.
Five volunteers passed the 1,000 hour mark during 1995 and their names were engraved on the Thousand Hour Roll Call plaque in the lobby of the home. They are: Ralph Chitty with 1,265 hours, Harry Humphry with 1,185, James "Rex" Haynes with 1,170, Louis Birkman, Jr. with 1,119 and Chester Herrington with 1,043.
The volunteer with the most hours served is Euil Trickey with 3,359 hours. Barbara Yallaly follows closely with 3,205 hours. Vergie Templeton has served 2,423 hours, with Agnes Bendel also over 2,000 hours at 2,376.
Other volunteers with over 1,000 hours are: Frieda Howard, 1,912; Lester Harris, 1,817; Hal Scowden, 1,308; John Eldridge with 1,299 and Nola Eldridge 1,198.
Volunteers with over 900 hours through December 31, 1995 are: Jim Tindall, Thelma Herrington and Dorothy Scowden.
With service of over 800 hours are Ray Ritchie, Al Mason and Fern Schlimme.
Those over 700 hours include Naomi McClard, Al Schlenker, Loren Shanks and Betty G. Cato.
Serving over 600 hours are Jim Harnes, Dolly AuBuchon, Ken Schreiner, John "Doc" Yallaly, Lois Woodford, Jim Foster, Gladys Lawrence and Mildred Foster.
Veterans Home volunteers with over 500 hours are Hugh LeDeure, Don Adams, Howard Spicer, Marie Spicer, Albert Elfrank, Wilda Rudert, Bill McDowell and Rupert Fiehler.
Those with over 400 hours are Bob Harper, Milton Nitsch, Paul Seabaugh, Ginger Beaudean, Evelyn Seabaugh, George Bartlett, H. K. Ken Carter, Geneva Schwartz, Jack Kinder, Tonya English, Fern Shultz and Bill Hasler.
Volunteers with over 300 hours are Virginia Fenimore, Marie Sebastian, Velma Dobbs, J. W. "Dick" Dobbs, Lavern VanWeelden, Vance Combs, Steve Francis, Betty Henderson, George Jenkins, Melvin Bacon, Ann Hefele, Charles Woodford, Fannie Gosche, Virgil Elfrink, Doris Criddle, Roy Rhodes, Clem Crain, Katherine King, Barbara Slinkard, Margaret Kracke and Charles Shultz.
Serving over 200 hours are Doyle Mouser, Francis Renard, Anne E. Brown, Harold Makins, Lillian Birkman, Charles Kight, Virginia Nance, Bob McLemore, Homer Schnurbusch, Raymond Mashek, Millard Schlimme, Betty E. Cato, Dahlia Emmons, Lloyd Zimmerman, Rosalee Sides, Helen Schnurbusch, Raymond Rampley, Marie Brantley, Louis Beaudean, Helen Trickey, Norman Sebastian, Herb Nance, Jerry Dixon, Earl Statler and Jim Riley.
Those with over 100 hours are Glen Bollinger, Viola Cook, Bill Bollinger, Perry Grindstaff, Walter Haynie, Shirley Welter, Millie Bolick, Mary Quade, Delores Simmons, Bob Rosenquist, Glenneta Vogelsang, Bonnie English, John Ferguson, Daisy Long, Jack Cracraft, Betty Rosenquist, Dale Wolfenkoehler, Harold Hunt, Verna Lee Nitsch, Jess Hopple, Ginny Jones, Paul Reynolds, Lavern Bangert, Bunny Smith, Dale Smith, Maple Williams, Carol Hadley, Bud Miller, Jerry Stauber, Tom Giles, Roger English, Ron Clark, Jim Zimmerman, Viola Beal, Paul Bell, Meta Hunt, Betty Myer, Marvin Campbell, Ale Cato, Bill Holder, Bob Seabaugh, Dorothy Ank and Hazel Elliott.
Volunteers who started work in 1995 and served over 40 hours but less than 100 hours are Frank Cook, Melvin Eggiman, Gary Estes, Lanny Grissom, Betty Hahs, Mike Holloway, Doris Meier, Lawrence Meier, Elmer Proctor, Bonnie Smith and Grace Wille.
There are 11 resident Veterans enrolled in the volunteer program. Their duties include serving as officers on the Resident Council, tending the bird feeders, helping set up for activities, helping with Bible study, assisting in the dining room and assisting fellow Veterans to meals and activities.
They are Charles Lincoln, Horace Woods, Theb Watson, Bill Walker, Pete Jerrell, Jim McClard, Harold Henderson, Joe Miller, Carl Stephens, Charles Clippard and John McFall.
