The Cape Central High School Theatre Chairperson Campaign has been and is currently on-going to raise funds for the restoration of the high school auditorium. While many may have already donated funds to this project, the cost for restoration of the seating alone will cost approximately $90,000. The $13,200 collected to date has been placed in an account until sufficient funds have been collected to warrant the beginning of the project. This program provides for participation through the donation of $50 or $100 levels. All contributions, large or small, are appreciated and go directly to the account designated for this worthwhile cause. Individuals giving to the above mentioned levels will have a nameplate placed on a seat in appreciation of their gift.

On May 28, 1993, the Board of Education received a request from student body representatives asking that an effort be made to improve the auditorium. The Board of Education committed the revenues from the sale of surplus real estate be dedicated to the auditorium project. Currently a sale is being negotiated and if successful would generate enough funds, combined with the funds already donated, to restore the auditorium seating. However, other improvements are needed related to lighting and sound systems, stage curtains, etc.

During the summer of 1993, the auditorium was completely repainted and minor repairs made. If you are interested in assisting the CHS Theatre project please call and request a "Chairperson Campaign" brochure. You may wish to get your chair before the upcoming spring musical, "The Sound of Music" on March 3, 4 and 5. Remember "Your Chair is Waiting."

Through the generosity of some interested individuals, Cape Central High School received a new floor during last summer. This new floor cost approximately $81,000. Many other individuals have been generous in their giving to this project. Quietly and without much fanfare these persons have collected $17,000 to help defer the cost. If you are interested in this project please contact Kermit Meystedt at Genesis Transportation Company, 335-2275.

The campaigns for the auditorium and the fieldhouse are worthy projects which benefit children throughout the entire district. While this is not the preferred method of improving our school facilities, it is rewarding to know interested citizens care enough to help. To this we simply say "thank you" for caring about our students.

Inclement weather procedures

With the arrival of the bitter cold weather of January and February officials are again faced with the decisions of school closing. Last year the Cape Girardeau public schools used a delayed start procedure to keep school open. This year we will attempt, when weather conditions permit, to use the delayed start procedure again. This will allow students to report to school two hours later than the normal time. The local radio and television news reports will cover the school closings and/or the delayed start information. Parents and community patrons are encouraged to listen to these news broadcasts to be kept informed on school closings. If parents have questions regarding these procedures please contact the principal of your local school or call the Board of Education office at 335-6654.
