Cape Girardeau will close one city street for private sewer repairs, and another road will be opened to traffic this week after completion of construction work.

Cecilia Street between Penny and Perry avenues will be closed to traffic beginning Wednesday, city officials said.

Traffic will be detoured via Woodlawn Avenue and Anna Street. Local traffic will be allowed only on portions of Cecilia Street, Public Works officials said.

The street is scheduled to reopen by Dec. 23.

Meanwhile, a section of West End Boulevard south of Highway 74 will reopen to traffic Thursday after a 2:30 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.

City engineer Casey Brunke said the project involved replacing the street and constructing sidewalks on West End Boulevard from Highway 74 south to Linden Street.

The work was part of a larger transportation project that included construction of sidewalks north of Highway 74 extending to Jefferson Street, Brunke said.

The West End Boulevard project was part of Transportation Trust Fund 4 approved by voters in 2010.

The entire project cost $1.9 million, Brunke said.

The City Council awarded a contract in February that included street construction and sidewalks on neighboring Walnut Street.

The street work on the Walnut Street project has been completed, but sidewalk construction continues along Walnut Street from Beaudean Lane to West End, Brunke said.
