An accused bank burglar only fled as far as the drive-through teller windows before Cape Girardeau police arrested him Friday morning.
Kyle W. Madden, 17, of 535 Asher St., was charged with felony stealing, burglary and property damage.
He is suspected of breaking through the front glass door of Commerce Bank, 1880 Cape La Croix Road, early Friday morning, police spokesman Jason Selzer said.
Police responded at 3:30 a.m. to a call of a suspicious person hiding the bushes by the bank. When officers arrived, they saw Madden in the drive-through teller lanes using a pickax to hammer away at a motorized teller drawer, according to Selzer.
Madden, who appeared under the influence of either drugs or alcohol, was arrested without incident, Selzer said.
Inside the bank, items were toppled over and rolls of coins were on the floor.
Along with breaking the glass door and taking the teller drawer, Madden is accused of stealing a Union Pacific truck, which was found at the scene, Selzer said.
Bond for Madden was set at $20,000.
