Sonia Tikoo, a seventh-grader at L.J. Schultz Middle School in Cape Girardeau, won first place in individual competition at the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics contest held May 1 in Columbia.

Tikoo was among 50 regional winners who had advanced to the state finals after finishing first, second or third in their region. She placed second in the individual rounds of the regional contest in Sikeston to advance to state.

On May 1, math champions took a one-hour exam with 30 questions that required numerous formulas and geometry skills.

After testing and scoring, Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics officials recognized winners at a noon awards ceremony.

Tikoo is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Mohan Tikoo of Cape Girardeau. Her math team sponsors at Schultz are Kathy Berkbigler and Mary LeGrand.
