Denison University sophomore Josef Werne of Cape Girardeau was recently named to membership in Denison University's chapter of the Phi Society academic honorary.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph R. Werne of Cape Girardeau.

Phi Society was founded at Denison, in Granville, Ohio, under the auspices of the university's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Werne, a 1991 graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School and a chemistry major and geology minor, is a member of the honors program and holds a National Merit Scholarship. He has also been a member of the Heisey Wind Ensemble, Denison Jazz Ensemble and Brass Ensemble.

He serves as co-president of the Outing Club and is a member of the Denison Chemical Society and varsity diving team.
