Daniel Hilty, a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School, has earned a $2,000 National Merit scholarship.
Of 14,000 students who reached the finalist level in the 1991 program, 1,800 were selected as recipients of these awards.
The single-payment National Merit $2,000 scholarships are distributed on a representational basis, and the number of winners in each state is proportional to the size of the state's graduating high school senior class.
Hilty is currently second vice president of National Honor Society, and a member of Scholar Bowl and Math Club. He has participated in Math Field Day and Chemistry Bowl competitions and has received several awards for his performance.
Hilty has been involved in other school organizations and volunteers with the Boy Scouts. He is also involved in activities at Centenary United Methodist Church.
He plans to pursue a career in biochemistry.
