A Cape Girardeau resident was honored recently at Ft. Riley, Kan. for his participation in Operation Desert Storm. PFC. Shannon L. Smith received the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal with "V" Device. He served as a tank driver with the 1st Infantry Division (Mech), 3/37th Armor. His division was deployed to the Gulf on Jan. 8 and was one of the first units to engage the Republican Guard in Iraq when the ground war started...

PFC Smith was graduated with the class of 1989 from Cape Central High School. He took his basic and advanced training at Ft. Knox, Ky. and upon graduating was stationed at Ft. Riley, Kan.

He has now received his honorable discharge from the Army and is residing in Cape Girardeau. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mac Smith of Cape Girardeau.
