Smoke testing to check for defects in the city's sanitary sewer system will begin Monday.
Smoke can be expected to be seen coming from roof vents, the ground where there is defective piping and possibly drain inlets beginning in the area south of Highway 74 and between West End Boulevard and Sprigg Street. The work will move northward over two weeks, ending in an area between Henderson Avenue and Sprigg Street.
According to a news release, RJN Group Inc. will be performing the work. Residents or business owner do not have to be present during smoke testing. The work is done mostly in the street, but workers may need to walk in yards to document observations.
Smoke used in the testing is nontoxic, harmless and does not create a fire hazard. Smoke should not enter a building unless there is defective plumbing or dry drain traps. Residents and businesses in the work areas should run water into floor drains, sinks and tubs to ensure there is water in the traps to prevent the smoke from entering a building.
If smoke does enter a building, residents should open windows and the smoke should dissipate quickly. Residents should also notify workers, who will wear bright yellow-green shirts. Workers' shirts and a van will be marked with the RJN name. If unable to locate a worker, residents should report the smoke directly to the city's pubic works department at 339-6351.
