They're selling exercise equipment, electric skillets and an intercom; chairs, china and a chain saw; baskets, bar stools and brand new tires; life jackets, lamps and ladies shoes; carpet, clothing, and cordless screwdrivers all for the fund.
At the Cape Girardeau Senior Center, the fund is always the building fund, for which the seniors are holding a benefit auction April 27.
The auction will be held inside the center and starts at 9 a.m.
Items, both new and old, have been donated for the auction and items are still being collected. To donate, call the center at 335-1352. Items may be dropped off at the center, 921 N. Clark, or items may be picked up.
A permanent home for the nutrition program and many other activities for Cape Girardeau's seniors was built in 1993. The seniors are whittling away at the loan, raising money through bake sales and dinners and the annual auction.
"It's all for the cause," said John Seay. "The money is going to the building fund. That's always our cause."
Ed Kohlfeld, along with Seay, is coordinating this year's auction.
Seay said the center's fund-raising efforts allow the seniors to hold their own against the bank note.
"There is a lot of effort and a lot of volunteering," he said.
The effort is worth it, Seay said. From his viewpoint, the center helps preserve Cape Girardeau's heritage by preserving the city's senior citizens.
"People have something to do. They meet with friends. They are able to have a meal with honor and dignity. It is really a wonderful place for the elderly to get together to meet one another and talk."
