Cape school district begins survey for strategic planning

On Friday, the Cape Girardeau School District released a community-wide survey as part of the district’s strategic-planning process that will map out priorities for the next five to 10 years.

In an email to parents, superintendent Jim Welker said the survey is a product of issues discussed during stakeholder meetings in August. Groups who participated included parents, students, teachers, school board members and community representatives.

“We encourage you to get involved with this process by completing the survey,” Welker said in the email.

Survey questions range from what people think the school district’s primary job is to what skills are most important for students to master.

Dana Saverino, the district’s director of communications, said the survey will be available at www.research.net/r/CGPSSurvey for two to three weeks, depending on how much traffic the site receives.

The point is to gather as much input as possible to determine what issues are most important to participants, she said.

After the survey closes, results will be collected and then presented to the district’s executive team in November. A 25-member steering committee also will hold a retreat in November.

In December, the plan will be presented to the school board and, if approved, finalized and distributed publicly.
