Patrons with a Cape Girardeau Public Library card can now embark on a new learning path that offers the ability to learn 24 languages, including English as a second language, with unlimited access. Available at the library for less than six months, The Rosetta Stone Language Library program lets people of different needs and backgrounds learn at their own pace.

The software has been used by NASA, the State Department and the U.S. Army as well as schools and colleges. Learning a new language or improving skills in a language you've already learned is free for patrons with a library card. Access is available from Cape Girardeau Public Library or from a computer at home.

Setting up a personal account provides instant online scoring, analyzes strengths and weaknesses and makes personalized recommendations to promote success. Unfinished tests can be saved, and 30 days are allotted for completion. Answers saved in the account are completely private.

Patrons simply provide their library card number and password and proceed at their own pace through the coursework.

The software uses thousands of real-life images, written text and the voices of native speakers to teach language as it is spoken. Users acquire everyday proficiency in listening and reading comprehension, speaking and writing.

For more information, call the library at 334-5279.
