City parks director Dan Muser's ideas for revamping the bathhouse at Central Municipal Pool took a beating Monday from the Cape Girardeau City Council.
The council on Monday approved two contracts for upgrades at the pool. One is for $378,683 with Arizon Structures Worldwide LLC to replace the air-inflated bubble roof that allows the pool to be used during cold months.
But it was the engineering contract with Markey and Associates Inc. to design renovations to the bathhouse that drew fire. Ward 4 council member Loretta Schneider, on hearing that the ideas didn't include private shower stalls or other upgrades she feels are vital, was clearly upset.
"What we have now is an absolute embarrassment to the city of Cape Girardeau," Schneider said. "Cosmetic work will not do the job."
With the contract for the bubble approved, the city has about $600,000 set aside for bathhouse improvements. Ward 5 council member Mark Lanzotti asked: "Could we not bulldoze it and build a new building for that amount?"
Muser said the preliminary plans and cost estimates were based on using that amount but no estimate had been made for a complete replacement. He told council members he will ask Markey and Associates to produce the estimate.
In other business, council members:
* Decided in their work session that the city does not need a law requiring prescriptions to purchase products containing pseudoephedrine, a key component in methamphetamine. Reacting to a request from the Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force for such a law, members decided the city will not follow along with other Southeast Missouri towns that have enacted such laws. Lanzotti, a lawyer, said it was a state issue, not a local one. "Part of me says this is outside our jurisdiction," he said.
* Heard in their work session that the city budget they will receive next month will include a 2.5 percent increase in water and sewer rates. During a discussion, Ward 1 council member John Voss said the money gained from higher sewer rates should help pay for the $2 million contract with Jacobs Engineering Group to design a new wastewater treatment plant.
* Approved a $1.9 million contract with Nip Kelley Equipment Co. for the Big Bend Road widening and reconstruction project. The project runs from the intersection of Mill Street and North Main Street to Flint Hill Road.
* Listened to a presentation on the Aug. 3 Transportation Trust Fund ballot issue, a presentation being used to promote the vote at civic and social organization meetings.
