The Cape Girardeau Central High School pompon squad received a first division trophy for competition at the Missouri State Dance Team Championships at Rockwood Summit High School Feb. 25.
The squad was among 120 dance teams from across the state to compete in pom, kick, jazz, prop and novelty dance categories.
Central competed with Rockwood Summit, Raytown South and Lafayette high schools in the 4A division and received a superior rating. The rating was based on choreography, originality and appearance of the squad. This was the third competition for the squad.
The pompon squad has performed at the Show Me Center for the University Christmas Basketball Tournament and at the second annual Doctor/Lawyer Basketball game, in addition to scheduled performances at CHS basketball and wrestling competitions.
Maria Swan serves as captain. Ellie Bennett is dance/choreography captain and Shannon Newcomb is business captain. Martha Stephens is the squad's sponsor.
