The Cape Girardeau Police Department is searching for an inmate who walked away from the city's recycling center on Southern Expressway while on work release Friday. Bryan K. Reid, 27, was working with three other inmates helping city workers collect and sort recyclables, said Sgt. Rick Schmidt. He said Reid was at the center during lunchtime, but left sometime before 2:40 p.m. Schmidt said Reid is not considered dangerous. "We don't let people on work release if they have a history of violent crimes," he said. He said inmates are dropped off by the jailer in the morning and monitored by city employees throughout the day. Schmidt said the inmate was serving a 100-day sentence for a city probation violation. He had been sentenced the morning before, Schmidt said. Police are now pursuing charges of escape from custody.
