A search is underway for a man suspected of stealing money Wednesday from the Dollar General Store in Cape Girardeau. The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. when a man asked a clerk at the store on 724 Broadway to make change for him, according to Sgt. Rick Schmidt of the Cape Girardeau Police Department. Schmidt said after the clerk told the man he would have to purchase an item to receive change, he agreed to buy an item and the clerk rang up the purchase. When the cash register drawer opened, the man grabbed an undisclosed amount of money. Schmidt said the man ran out of the store's front door and headed east on Broadway. No one was hurt, and the suspect never displayed a weapon. Those with information about the crime should call the police department at 335-6621.
