A woman who reported a robbery Wednesday night to Cape Girardeau police may have tried to impersonate a police officer to attempt to recover her possessions, police said.

The robbery was reported at 7 p.m., when the woman went to the police department and stated she'd been robbed by a man from whom she'd accepted a ride.

She gave police conflicting stories while explaining the report, according to Sgt. Jason Selzer, spokesman for the police department.

She said she and the man had gone to buy some liquor and then driven to his apartment complex, where he took her purse, her money and credit cards.

She told police that she needed her BlackBerry back right away because she was a nurse and needed to be available in case she was called into work, Selzer said.

Police checked her credentials and found she was not registered as a nurse or nurse practitioner in Missouri, Selzer said.

She later returned to the man's apartment complex looking for him and was knocking on doors saying she was a narcotics officer with the Cape Girardeau police, also not true, Selzer said.

No charges have yet been filed against either the person, police said.
