Cape Girardeau residents who believe they have witnessed a crime now have an anonymous way to send information to police.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department on Tuesday announced the launch of its free smartphone app, as well as an anonymous tip text number, hotline and website.

"Working with the community, we reduced crime in the city by 11 percent last year," police chief Wes Blair said in a news release. "We're hoping these new tools will help more people partner with us in keeping Cape safe."

The app is available for both Android and iPhone smartphones, the relase said.

Sgt. Jason Selzer said getting the app approved through Apple took a little longer than expected, and the department wanted to wait until all components of the plan were ready before launching it.

People also can text "CAPEPD" to 847411 with a message or tip, submit tips online at cityofcape.org/crimetips or call the hotline at 339-6313, according to the release.

Selzer stressed 911 should always be used in emergency situations. The anonymous tip system is not monitored 24 hours a day and is more for helping "start the converstaion related to other criminal activity," according to the release.

"You can start a conversation with an officer if you don't feel comfortable calling, and you have something that's ongoing that you want either advice, or it's a crime you're reporting or something like that," Selzer said.

Users also can submit photos via the app or website.

"The texting doesn't allow the pictures," Selzer said. "But if you have the free app, you can submit pictures."

Photos sent through the app will not show up in the conversation except on the police department's end, but the messages will remain visible, Selzer said.
