Cape Girardeau police are investigating a shooting that occurred at 9:08 p.m. Friday in the 900 block of South Pacific Street.

A man was shot through the abdomen somewhere in the 900 block of South Pacific and was transported to the trauma unit at a Cape Girardeau hospital. Police could not release specific information about the victim because of the ongoing investigation.

Cape Girardeau Police Sgt. Rick Schmidt said the emergency personnel described the victim's condition as stable, and police planned to interview the victim Saturday after he received surgery.

"He's safe and secure," Schmidt said. "Getting the best care he can get."

Neighbors, who wished to remain anonymous, said the victim was shot through the back, and several shots were fired.

Schmidt said police are investigating the scene as though there were multiple shooters until that scenario can be ruled out.

Police collected evidence in the front yard at 915 S. Pacific St., although Schmidt was unable to say whether that was the location of the shooting. Schmidt also said the victim could have been shot several times, although he only saw one wound before the victim was transported to the hospital.

Schmidt said there was at least one witness, although there were no suspects Friday night. Police planned to impound a Pontiac G-6 car parked on the block that may have been involved in the shooting.
