Cape Girardeau police were investigating a beating Tuesday afternoon on North Middle Street.

Officers responded to the scene about 4 p.m.

The male victim apparently was confronted by the suspect, who brandished a weapon, then struck the victim in the head with a pistol, Cpl. Darin Hickey of the Cape Girardeau Police Department said. The head injury was not life-threatening.

Hickey said prescription medication was taken from the victim, and police were interviewing several witnesses.

The suspect was not in custody, but Hickey said police believe the two people knew each other.

"We're still investigating at this time and do not feel the public is in danger," Hickey said. "It did not appear to be a random incident."
