Cape police get arrest warrant for weekend stabbing

Cape Girardeau police obtained an arrest warrant this week for Edwin T. Patterson, 37, 423 S. Hanover St., in connection with a stabbing that occurred last weekend on Fountain Street.

According to a probable-cause statement by Sgt. Rick Price, police responded to 115 N. Fountain St. early April 27 in reference to a stabbing.

When they arrived, one of the victims, Gregory Horton, was discovered walking down Broadway and a second, Eric Tunnell, had been transported to a nearby hospital by private vehicle.

Horton, who suffered a stab wound to the leg, said he'd been standing outside his residence at 115 N. Fountain St. when he was stabbed by an unknown assailant.

Tunnell said he'd been attacked when he walked outside the residence. He told police he'd been approached by a man who demanded money and began stabbing him when he refused. Tunnell suffered a laceration to his neck and stab wounds to his body.

The statement said Tunnell and Horton were selling a hand gun to two people and that the stabbing suspect, later identified as Patterson, was the middleman.

During the transaction, the police arrived and the gun disappeared, the statement said. Tunnell and Horton suspected Patterson had "ripped them off," and a fight developed between Tunnell and Patterson at the residence. It was during the fight, with Horton trying to separate the two men, that the stabbing occurred, the statement said.

Both Tunnell and Horton picked Patterson out of a photo array, police said.

Patterson has an outstanding arrest warrant in Stoddard County for a probation violation, the statement said.
