A $2,500 traffic enforcement grant was recently awarded to the Cape Girardeau Police Department by the Missouri Division of Highway Safety, the Missouri Police Chief's Association and the Missouri Safety Center.
The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant is designed to assist in the effort to combat drunk driving and increase safety belt use in Missouri.
Law enforcement agencies in 20 counties participate in the program.
The grant will be used to boost police presence on the road, according to police chief Steve Strong.
"During this statewide effort to eliminate hazardous driving behaviors, our officers will be more visible on the roads, enforcing all traffic laws, but focusing on DWI enforcement, including preventing underage drinking and promoting safety belt use," Strong said. "By enforcing existing laws, we hope to make the roads safer for everyone in our community."
