Christine Stephens of Cape Girardeau grieves for herself and the world, but not for her pen pal, Mother Teresa.

"She's earned her reward in heaven," said Stephens. "We can take comfort in the fact that she is happy."

Last August Stephens wrote a note along with her contribution to Mother Teresa's work with the poor. To her surprise the famous nun wrote back.

Over the past year she has received several typewritten notes signed by Mother Teresa. The most recent came just over a month ago. They corresponded about different topics, including Stephens' work with local anti-abortion activities.

Stephens mailed her reply Wednesday. "I guess some other nun will reply," she said.

Mother Teresa's death didn't come as a shock because of her age and heart condition, Stephens said.

"The latest I had heard was that she was going to attend Princess Diana's funeral," Stephens said.

Princess Diana and Mother Teresa practiced many of the same principles, Stephens said.

"When they went to hospitals and other places they would touch these people, would talk to them and caress them lovingly," Stephens said.

She hopes people won't compare the outpouring of sympathy for Princess Diana and Mother Teresa; such comparisons would be pointless, she said.

Mother Teresa will be missed, but Stephens is sure her work will continue.

"She has started missions all over the world, in the United States, even in St. Louis," Stephens said. "The Sisters of Charity practice her same virtues, and they will continue."

Those who want to honor Mother Teresa should send a donation to the Sisters of Charity so they can continue their work, Stephens suggested.

"She never raised funds for her work," Stephens said. But donations kept arriving. "She relied completely on faith that God would provide, and you see the miracles she has provided."
