A Cape Girardeau native will receive an award from the American Foreign Service Association for her contributions as a foreign service office management specialist.

Carol K. Backman, who holds a bachelor of arts degree from Southeast Missouri State University, joined the AFSA as an office management specialist in 2002. Since that time, she has been assigned to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Minsk, Belarus; Canberra, Australia; and Washington, D.C. She's currently assigned to Ankara, Turkey.

A news release from the AFSA said Backman was recognized because of her "contributions to effectiveness, professionalism and morale" at work. She helped identify inconsistencies within the embassy's content management system and overhauled it, the release said, a move that improved efficiency by increasing information sharing.
