A display of historic headgear is coming to the Cape River Heritage Museum next month.
Merchandise from Dolye Hat Shop, one of Cape Girardeau's early businesses, will go on display March 15. The hats were donated to the museum's clothing collection by area families, according to museum officials.
The hat shop, originating in a log cabin, was on the corner of Themis and Spanish Streets in Cape Girardeau. At one point, the shop moved directly across the street on the opposite corner. Founded in 1859 by Elvira Harris, the shop closed its doors in 1960.
The hats on display are from the early 1900s to 1950s. Included are a cloche hat from the 1920s, a pillbox hat from the 1950s and a child's hat made of taffeta and adorned with ostrich feathers.
Museum board member Beverly Hahs said she is eager for the community as well as tourists to view the exhibit when it opens.
The exhibit will remain on display indefinitely. Hahs hopes it will become part of the museum's permanent collection.
Cape River Heritage Museum is in the Old Fire Station, 538 Independence. Admission is $2.50 for adults, $1 for children. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays from March to December or by appointment. For more information, call 334-0405.
