Cape middle school aims for 100 percent score on multiplication test

About 350 Cape Girardeau middle schoolers are a step closer to meeting a schoolwide academic goal. The school is working on a multiplication facts campaign to achieve a 100 percent passing rate on a timed test, said principal Mark Kiehne. The school recognized the students who have passed during an assembly Tuesday. Kiehne said he wants to motivate the remaining students, about 200, to meet the challenge. Students take a five-minute, 100-problem test during their lunch period. Students are tested once every three days and they will be tested more frequently as the school year continues, Kiehne said. "We know they're going to need this forever," he said. Pushing students to learn multiplication will also give them a base for problems on the Missouri Assessment Program tests, he said.
