A Cape Girardeau man was sentenced to probation Tuesday for his actions in a botched burglary at Fred's Discount Store in August. Cape Girardeau Circuit Judge sentenced Andrew T. Laxton, 18, to five years probation for burglary and stealing after he locked himself in the store while trying to steal from it. Laxton had been in jail 51 days for the offense. At 3:45 a.m. Aug. 26, police responded to a motion activated alarm at Fred's Discount Store, 121 S. Sprigg St., where they found Laxton locked in the store with $509.69 worth of merchandise in bags. Laxton had hidden in the store and waited for it to close so he could steal clothing and dog treats, but was locked in once the store closed. Laxton was unarmed when he was arrested.
