He said he was knocked in the air as the car continued to move. He suffered a broken thighbone and was awaiting surgery Thursday evening.

After hitting Sides, the driver made a U-turn, drove less than a block, stopped, got out of the car and ran, said Cape Girardeau Police Lt. Dennis Dolan.

Police have identified the driver as a 12-year-old but have not found him. Moses Gater of St. Louis owns the 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass but had left the car in the custody of a girlfriend and was not responsible for the accident, Dolan said.

As of Thursday night, police were still looking for the suspect, Dolan said.
