Goodin graduated from Central High School and later from Southeast Missouri State University with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice.

He received his 2nd Lt. commission through the ROTC program at the university, where he served as drill team captain and corps commander.

He is the son of James and Carolyn Goodin, 1830 Westridge.
