A Cape Girardeau man was arrested Tuesday on a charge of first-degree statutory rape, police reported Wednesday.
Greggory M. Brown, 41, is accused of having sexual intercourse with a girl younger than 14, online court records show.
Police responded to a hospital about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday and spoke with a juvenile who was there with a parent, said Darin Hickey, public information officer for the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
"It became apparent through speaking with the juvenile that she had been involved and had sexual intercourse with an adult," Hickey said.
He said police found the suspect, identified as Brown, and arrested him Tuesday evening.
"He was a family friend," Hickey said. "He was known to the juvenile."
Brown is in custody on $50,000 cash or surety bond, Hickey said.
Online court records show as a condition of bond, Brown must have no contact with the victim, must stay more than 500 feet away from her residence and may not be alone with any female child younger than 18.
According to online court records, the offense occurred Jan. 1, 2013.
