CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A Cape Girardeau man was among those arrested in connection with a shooting early Friday morning in Carbondale.
Darrion D. Jake, 26, is in jail in Murphysboro, Ill., on charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and mob action, the Carbondale Police Department reported Monday.
In a news release Saturday, the department reported someone had been shot in the abdomen during an altercation early Friday morning on South Illinois Avenue in Carbondale.
The victim was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the release stated.
Police found the victim during an investigation into a disturbance about 12:40 a.m. Friday in the 500 block of South Illinois Avenue, where they found multiple fights occurring amid a crowd of about 200 people who had gathered in the street, the release stated.
Police used pepper spray to disperse the crowd, according to the release.
The altercation that led to the shooting occurred inside a nearby business, the release stated.
Also charged with mob action in the case were Robert E. Glass, 43, and Ternell Albritton, 28, both of Carbondale, the department reported Monday.
Police found and arrested all three men about 8 p.m. Friday, the Monday news release stated.
Online court records show no prior offenses for Jake.
The area of Carbondale where the fights broke out is part of a popular business and entertainment district commonly referred to as "the Strip."
In 1995, to quell problems with fights and other illegal activity during the area's annual Halloween street party, Carbondale began requiring bars on the Strip to close for Halloween weekend -- a policy the city lifted last fall for a one-year trial period, allowing three bars to open, according to a July 17 article in the Southern Illinoisan newspaper.
